Dit boek vertelt de geschiedenis van vrouwelijke distillateurs, brouwers en ondernemers in de genotsmiddelenindustrie met bijzondere aandacht voor de 'Whiskey Women' in Schotland, Ierland en de Verenigde Staten. De eerste twee hoofdstukken gaan over bewijzen van vrouwelijke brouwers in de Oudheid en de Middeleeuwen, en over de eerste distillaties uitgevoerd door vrouwelijke alchemisten en apothekers. Omdat zij apparaten gebruikten die sterk leken op hulpmiddelen uit de keuken, werden zij door sommige onderzoekers beschouwd als de eerste chemici.In het derde hoofdstuk gaat het over de Ierse whiskey, waarvan de opbrengsten in de 17e en 18e eeuw zo hoog werden, dat Engeland besloot om zware belastingen te heffen. Dit leidde tot conflicten en zelfs geweld. Vervolgens is Schotland aan de beurt, waar de belangrijkste destilleerderij van Johnnie Walker gerund werd door vrouwen. Grote bedrijven trachtten kleine, private ondernemingen op te kopen en sommige ondernemende vrouwen hadden veel moeite om hun bedrijf in familiehanden te houden. In de Verenigde Staten was whiskey aanvankelijk een medicijn, dat vrouwen toedienden bij de verzorging van soldaten. Alsmaar komt er meer weerstand tegen het overmatige alcoholgebruik en de industrie komt zwaar onder druk te staan (o.a. Prohibition Act in de VS). Ook na de periode van de drooglegging werd de handel nog bemoeilijkt en smokkelaars ('bootleggers') riskeerden hun vrijheid voor vette winsten.

De industrie en het grote kapitaal menen de oplossingen te hebben om honger en voedseltekorten de wereld uit te helpen, maar zij erkennen het belang van de biodiversiteit en een gezonde bodemgesteldheid niet. Ontwikkelingslanden worden gedwongen tot monocultuur en arme boeren worden voor elk aspect van de landbouw afhankelijk gemaakt van bedrijven zoals Monsanto. Levende organismen (zaden) worden de intellectuele eigendom van de GGO-industrie (Genetisch Gemanipuleerde Organismen), en via hun patenten verstevigen zij hun monopolie. Onder druk van een machtige lobby is het bijhouden van zaad (wat bij boeren altijd al gebruikelijk is geweest) opeens illegaal geworden. Vrouwelijke wetenschappers en activisten van over de hele wereld (o.a. Vandana Shiva) verzetten zich tegen de macht van deze grote bedrijven. Zij doorprikken de mythe van GGO’s , want de beloften dat honger erdoor uitgeroeid zou worden zijn niet waargemaakt (integendeel zelfs). Ze bekritiseren het beleid, vertellen ons over het belang van de biodiversiteit om op een duurzame manier voedsel te produceren en laten ons zien welke alternatieven tot onzer beschikking staan.

De voedselwinning uit bossen, de toegang tot vers water en de visserij vormen de hoofdmoot van dit boek. Verschillende case-studies uit Azië en Latijns-Amerika schetsen hoe lokale gemeenschappen – en in het bijzonder vrouwen – omgaan met de toenemende druk op het ecosysteem en op hun inkomen. De handel in bushmeat in Vietnam is bijvoorbeeld een typische mannen-aangelegenheid. Het is nog altijd taboe voor vrouwen om zich hierin te mengen, ook al zijn vele gezinnen afhankelijk van de bijkomende inkomsten. Ook elders in de wereld komen huisindustrieën onder druk te staan. Als waterbronnen opdrogen of vervuild geraken, moeten vrouwen vaak grotere afstanden afleggen, wat uiteindelijk ook meer kost. Ook in de visserij delven vrouwen vaak het onderspit. Zolang de cultuur niet veranderd, worden vrouwen gemarginaliseerd en kunnen zij niet optimaal deelnemen aan het duurzame beheer en exploitatie van hun natuurlijke omgeving.
